Why Garlic Is One of Nature’s Most Powerful Healers
Garlic isn’t just a flavorful addition to your recipes, it’s been used as medicine for thousands of years around the world, and for good reason. Garlic is one of the oldest known medicinal plants, with its healing use dating back over 5,000 years.
Ancient Egypt: Garlic was prized by the Egyptians with records from around 2500 BC showing it was given to workers building the pyramids to boost strength and stamina.
Ancient China and India: Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda have used garlic for thousands of years to support digestion, immunity, and respiratory health.
Ancient Greece and Rome: Hippocrates, the “father of medicine,” prescribed garlic for everything from respiratory problems to parasites and fatigue.
Nutrient Powerhouse: What’s Inside Garlic?
This humble bulb packs a serious punch when it comes to fighting illness and boosting your body’s defenses. Garlic is loaded with vitamins and minerals that your body craves:
Vitamin C — essential for immune support and skin health
Vitamin B6 — supports brain function and mood regulation
Selenium — a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from damage
Calcium — important for strong bones and muscle function
Iron — vital for oxygen transport and energy
Allicin: Garlic’s Superstar Compound
When you crush or chop fresh garlic, it releases a compound called allicin — and this is where the magic happens. Allicin has been scientifically shown to:
Lower cholesterol
Reduce high blood pressure
Fight harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi
Allicin’s antibiotic, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and even anti-cancer properties make garlic a true all-star in natural healing.
The Detox Dynamo
One of garlic’s lesser-known but incredibly important roles is its ability to help eliminate toxins from the liver and the lymphatic system. Your lymph is like your body’s sewer system. It moves waste, dead cells, and harmful substances out of your tissues. When lymph flow slows, toxins build up, and your immune system can get overwhelmed. Garlic’s powerful compounds stimulate the lymphatic system, helping your body detoxify naturally and stay resilient. Garlic’s antioxidant and sulfur compounds help neutralize toxins and support the liver’s detox pathways. With the liver working well, the lymphatic system can more easily pick up and transport waste. It’s antioxidant and sulfur compounds help neutralize toxins and support the liver’s detox pathways. With the liver working well, the lynpathic system is less burdened and can focus on moving waste away from the tissues.
When to Use Garlic Daily
Adding garlic to your daily wellness routine can be especially helpful if you’re dealing with:
Ear infections
Candida or other fungal infections
Bronchitis and respiratory infections
Food poisoning
Coronary artery disease
Common colds and flu
Urinary tract infections
A weakened immune system
We are all juggling things, kids, work, the house, etc and so adding another item to your daily routine might sound like another thing to stress about. But garlic is such a powerhouse for your immune system, detox and overall health that’s why it’s WORTH figuring our an easy no-fuss way to sneak it in!I
Fresh & Crushed - buy fresh garlic bulbs, peel a clove, crush it lightly with the side of a knife, and let it sit for 5 minutes before adding it to your meals. This activates the magic compound allicin. Then toss it into pasta sauce, stir-fry, or soups. No need to cook it forever just add it near the end so it keeps its healing powers.
Garlic-Infused Olive Oil - if you want garlic flavor without the intense bite, make a quick garlic olive oil by gently warming some olive oil with a couple of smashed garlic cloves. Drizzle it on salads, steamed veggies, or even toast. Bonus: It’s tasty and feels fancy, but takes less than 5 minutes.
Garlic and Honey Shot- for a quick immune boost, crush one clove of garlic and mix it with a teaspoon of raw honey. It’s potent but effective! Pop it like a shot when you feel a cold coming on or need a detox kick.
Peel it and Chew it - yes you read that right. Peel the bulb and eat the garlic. I keep a glass of water close buy to wash it down!
How to Get the Most from Garlic
Fresh is best: Allicin forms when garlic is crushed or chopped and then exposed to air for a few minutes before cooking.
Don’t overcook: High heat can destroy allicin, so add garlic towards the end of cooking when possible.
Consider supplements: If fresh garlic isn’t your thing, quality garlic supplements can provide many benefits.
Final Thoughts
Garlic is truly one of nature’s most potent healers, supporting everything from your heart health to your immune system to your body’s ability to detoxify.
If you haven’t already made garlic a daily habit, now’s the time to start. Your body—and your taste buds—will thank you.
Hydration: More Than Just Drinking Water
It all begins with an idea.
We’ve all heard it before,“Drink more water!” And while it’s true that water is essential, hydration is about way more than just chugging glass after glass of water. Here’s why it matters: water makes up about 60% of the human body. It’s not just a “nice to have,” but it’s literally what keeps us alive and functioning. Did you know that water helps:
Regulate your body temperature
Transport nutrients to your cells.
Give structure to your tissues and cells.
Remove waste and keep things moving.
When you’re hydrated, your liver, kidneys, and detox pathways can actually do their jobs, clearing out toxins, filtering out what doesn’t belong, and keeping you feeling more energized and less sluggish. When you’re not properly hydrated, your lymph and blood can both take a big hit which can have a ripple effect on the whole body.
Here’s what happens. Your blood get thicker and your lymph flows slows down. Water is a key component of blood plasma, so when you’re dehydrated, your blood volume decreases and the blood becomes more concentrated (thicker). When the blood becomes concentrated this makes it harder for your heart to pump and can reduce oxygen delivery to your cells, and can leave you feeling tired, dizzy or foggy. Dehydration reduces overall blood flow. Less circulation means slower healing, less nutrients delivered to your body and cold hands and feet.
Your lymphatic system is like your body’s drainage network, moving waste, toxins and immune cells. It’s about 95% water. So without enough hydration, the lymph fluid becomes sluggish, waster products linger in your tissues longer and your immune sestet can't respond as quickly! This is why when your dehydrated you feel puffy, swollen or just plain old “blah.”
Both the blood and lymph carry waste products to your liver and kidneys to be filtered out. Without enough water, these organs can’t filter efficiently, so toxins build up! This can cause headaches, skin breakouts, and a heavy, bloated feeling.
The Truth About Staying Hydrated
Staying hydrated isn’t just about quenching thirst, it’s about keeping your body’s transport systems (blood and lymph) flowing freely so you can feel clear, energized and resilient. You don’t have to drown yourself in water to stay hydrated. In fact, over-hydrating without minerals can actually flush out important electrolytes. The sweet spot? Drinking water steadily throughout the day and adding hydration from whole foods and mineral-rich liquids.
Some of my favorite ways to stay hydrated:
Lemon water – helps to flush the lymph and liver while giving the body some vitamin C.
Coconut water – nature’s electrolyte drink.
Fresh raw veggies – cucumbers, celery, peppers… all loaded with water content.
Fresh fruit – watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, oranges, berries.
Cucumber juice – cool, refreshing, and full of minerals your body loves.
💡 Hot Mess Tip: Start your morning with a tall glass 16-24oz of lemon water before you put anything into your body. It flushes the liver which has been working hard all night and flushes the lymph. while waking up your digestion. Plus it just sets the tone for the rest of the day that your are taking control of your health!
